- RADIOSOL FM radio build guide: Covers assembly checks, power rules, and first tuning.
- Power rule: Use batteries or USB 5V power, never both at the same time.
- First boot: The radio auto-scans and saves available FM stations automatically.

- Key settings: Reception threshold (SN), power saving (PO), signal display (DP).
RADIOSOL FM Radio Build Guide: Hardware Overview
Before tuning a single station, confirm your build is correct. The RADIOSOL kit is built around the RDA5807 FM receiver module, and every control described in this guide depends on a properly assembled board. Locate each component before powering on.
Video Highlights:
- Identifying the audio output, power switch, USB connector, LED, and volume potentiometer
- Correct battery versus USB power selection
- Automatic first-boot station scan
- Volume, tuning, and setup-mode button combos
- Reception threshold, power saving, and signal strength settings
| Component | Function | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Audio output jack | Headphones or external speaker | Use for private listening or louder output |
| Power switch | Turns the radio on/off | Flip on to trigger auto-scan |
| USB connector | 5V power input | Only when no batteries installed |
| LED indicator | Power light | Confirms the radio is receiving power |
| Volume potentiometer | Physical volume knob | Separate from V+/V- digital volume |
Never connect USB power while batteries are installed. Doing so may damage the radio. USB power is only safe when the battery compartment is empty.
First Boot and Basic Tuning
Powering on a freshly built RADIOSOL radio triggers an automatic scan. Because no stations are saved yet, the radio searches the FM band and stores everything it finds. From there, the six buttons handle all daily operation.
Volume Control
- V+: Increase volume
- V-: Decrease volume
- Also used to change settings
Station Search
- F- hold: Search downward
- F+ hold: Search upward
- Found stations are not auto-saved
Station Switching
- F- tap: Previous saved station
- F+ tap: Next saved station
- Fast browsing of your list
| Button | Short Press | Long Press |
|---|---|---|
| V+ | Volume up | Add station to list (in list mode) |
| V- | Volume down | Adjust frequency down (in list mode) |
| F+ | Next saved station | Search upward for a station |
| F- | Previous saved station | Search downward for a station |
Stations found with a long-press search are not added to the save list automatically. To keep one, enter station list management mode and press and hold V+ while tuned to it.
Setup Mode and Advanced Settings
Press and hold V+ and V- simultaneously to enter setup mode. Three settings are available, navigated with F+/F- and adjusted with V+/V-. The display codes make each setting easy to identify.
| Setting Code | Function | Range | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SN04 | Reception threshold | 0-15 | 4 | Lower = more stations, weaker quality; higher = fewer, cleaner stations |
| PO000 | Power saving mode | 0-1 | 0 | 1 = display turns off after ~13 seconds idle |
| DP00 | Signal strength display | 0-1 | 0 | 1 = display alternates frequency and signal strength |
Enter Setup Mode
Press and hold V+ and V- at the same time. The display shows SN04, the reception threshold setting.
Adjust Reception Threshold
Use V+ to increase or V- to decrease the value between 0 and 15. Lower values pull in more stations but may include weak or invalid ones.
Set Power Saving
Press F+ to move to PO000. Toggle between 0 (off) and 1 (on) with V+ or V-.
Enable Signal Display
Press F+ again for DP00. Toggle with V+ or V-, then press F+ or F- to exit and return to the main interface.
Keep SN at the default of 4 for a balanced station list. If you live in a dense urban FM market, raising it to 6-8 filters out noisy fringe stations effectively.
Station List Management and Rescan
The saved station list is managed in its own mode. Press and hold F- and F+ simultaneously to enter it; the digital display flashes to confirm. To rescan the entire FM band from scratch, press and hold V+ and F+ at the same time.
Enter List Mode
Press and hold F- and F+ together. The flashing display confirms you are in station list management mode.
Tune to a Frequency
Press V+ to increase the frequency or V- to decrease it. The frequency does not need to already be saved.
Add or Remove Stations
Press and hold V+ to add the current frequency to the list. Unwanted frequencies can be removed the same way.
Exit List Mode
Press and hold F- and F+ together again to return to normal radio operation.
When signal strength display is enabled, the main screen alternates between frequency and signal strength. With power saving on, the display sleeps after about 13 seconds; press any button to wake it.
Build Checklist and FAQ
Work through this checklist before and after your first listening session to confirm the build is fully operational.
RADIOSOL Build Verification:
- All solder joints inspected and board cleaned
- Audio output tested with headphones or speaker
- Power source chosen: batteries or USB, not both
- First-boot auto-scan completed and stations saved
- Reception threshold and power saving configured
If reception quality drops over time, raise the SN threshold by one or two steps and rescan with a long press of V+ and F+ to rebuild a cleaner station list.
Q: Can I use USB power and batteries at the same time in the RADIOSOL FM radio?
No. USB power should only be used when no batteries are installed. Applying USB power with batteries present may damage the radio.
Q: How do I rescan all FM stations on the RADIOSOL radio?
Press and hold V+ and F+ at the same time to rescan the full FM band. This rebuilds the saved station list from scratch.
Q: Why does the display turn off by itself?
Power saving mode (PO setting) is enabled. The display sleeps after about 13 seconds of inactivity. Press any button to wake it, or set PO to 0 in setup mode to disable the feature.
Q: What does the SN setting do in this FM radio build guide?
SN controls the reception threshold from 0 to 15. Lower values receive more stations, including weak ones; higher values filter out poor-quality signals for a cleaner list.
